2) Evaluate the use of software applications to generate pre-production documents within the sector.
There are many types of software to help during pre-production from script writing programs such as ‘Celtx’ and Storyboard and Design in ‘Storyboard Artist’ by Power Production Software.
Celtix – Is one that I have used to enable me to create my script, this software makes the process of writing a script easier and more efficient. It breaks down all the different categories that you have to include within a script. For example, you would have the actors name, then their lines, the camera angle used and any extra actions that they have to do with it.
Storyboard Artists - Is very similar, it does the same, but instead allows you to make your storyboard, so that your final production is more visual and looks realistic.
3) Identify client requirements based on their brief to include the target audience.
The client brief was to create a web series to be shown online or on mobile phones (and/or other platforms/mediums). The web series had to follow editorial guidelines, incase it was broadcasted on national television. Each film/episode was to be about 2-3 minutes long. The web series could be any genre (Sitcom, soap, reality, drama, documentary) I chose to do a comedy about reality. When making my production ‘Park Buddies’ I had limit to cast and only had a few contributors, this effected my filming, as well I had to consider their work too, and when they would have some time to allow me to use them to film. Also I had limited areas to where I could film my project, as some areas I needed permission to film on. Another factor that I needed to consider was my budget of when creating the series, I had to keep it low budget and my ideas had to be realistic, I couldn’t do anything to far fetched or extreme. I had to rely on filming near my work base or near IMT/Ravensbourne.
4) Identify the genre/style of the work to be created and what conventions will be used.
For ‘Park Buddies’ I will be doing a comedy that involves reality, or almost a comedy about reality, because of the layout of our production we wanted it to be almost like a host show and people could put their ideas/thoughts forward. We kept to normal conventions of this by looking at other similar shows for example shows like Xtra Factor, the show having the two hosts be seen as friendly them selves and funny, so that people could see that our audience would notice this. We chose two people that would come across like this as well, also have a female presenter and male presenter allows the audience to relate to both sides. We also chose to film it in quite and friendly environment and lucky enough it was sunny, this gives the whole shot a positive look, so that instantly makes the audience feel relaxed and at ease, for example if we had filmed it in a gritty dark area, it would of put the audience edge and made them feel tense. What also makes it funny is the main conversation, we chose to have the two actors talking about funny situations or funny topics that people could relate to or simply mock the hosts. By putting our actors in situations for example when Santa attempts to ‘chat up’ Michelle, he get knocked back, this would prove to be funny to audience as we see this on a lot of similar shows.
5) Select appropriate equipment, resources and software for creating pre-production documents.
For making ‘Park Buddies’ the appropriate equipment we would need would just be a camera and microphone. We didn’t need any prop’s in our production as it is mainly just about conversation. We didn’t need any resources, as we wanted the conversation to run freely, this made it more interesting and led to lots of awkward moments, which creates the comedy. For the software we recorded straight onto a camera and then would put the footage on the laptop. We would use final cut pro to edit our footage and use ‘Celtix’ to create our script. Also ‘Storyboard Artist’ to create our story board and make our final production more visual and achievable.
6) Compare and contrast different formats for pre-production documents and how they relate to final product to be created including a) Mood Board, b) Mind map/spider, diagram c) Visualization diagram or sketch, d) Story board.
All these different formats for pre-production have their advantages and dis-advantages. For example using a mood board portrays your individual ideas and your own thoughts, really showing of your own individuality. But when working on a project in a group like we are for ‘Park Buddies’ it is difficult as the people you may be working with have different visions and ideas to put across as well, this is why having a mind map/spider diagram may come in more use because it allows you to put all your ideas down and then build off them, but the disadvantage of this is that you have so many different ideas down that they may not link at all and causing confusion when coming to produce your final idea. Story boarding would help clear up the confusion as it is set out shot by shot and explains the whole idea of your production, but the disadvantage would be that it may not portray your own individual ideas as where a mood board would. It would just show how your production would go from start to finish. A visualization diagram or sketch is a mixture between a mood board and story board, it can be very effective if you are able to work in that typical format, but can become very confusing and actually may be seen as just a waste of time as they may not be as effective a mind map/spider diagram would be.
7) Create a project plan to produce the pre-production documents to include a) Tasks b) Timescale’s c) Resources
